Fougerolles-Saint-Valbert

Welcome to Fougerolles-Saint-Valbert, cherry country par excellence. Listed as a “Site Remarquable du Goût” (Outstanding Taste Site), this commune invites you to explore a unique sensory experience, where local know-how is handed down from generation to generation.

Remarkable City of Taste

Fougerolles-Saint-Valbert’s cherry-growing expertise is not only a precious heritage but also a national accolade. In December 2018, “la culture de la cerise de Fougerolles” and “la distillation du Kirsch de Fougerolles” were listed as part of France’s intangible cultural heritage, an honour that highlights the importance of this tradition.

Fougerolles kirsch, with its Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) obtained in May 2010, is the jewel in the crown of this tradition. The production of this precious elixir, as well as other eaux de vie, is the fruit of know-how shared between cherry growers, distillers and distillers. This cooperation is at the heart of cherry traditions and helps to preserve this unique know-how.

The magic cherry blossom

Every spring, Fougerolles-Saint-Valbert is transformed, offering a natural spectacle of striking beauty. The 15,000 or so cherry blossom trees immerse the region in an ephemeral and enchanting landscape. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, an unforgettable photo shoot or a bike ride, the cherry blossom season is a must. As in Japan, this is known as hanami, which means “to look at the flowers”, and corresponds to the period when everyone takes the time to admire the cherry blossom.

In June, don’t miss the Cherry Festival, when the fruit is celebrated with a variety of events and tastings to delight young and old alike.

The Pays de la Cerise Ecomuseum a journey through time

For those wishing to explore more of the history of Fougerolles-Saint-Valbert, the Écomusée du Pays de la Cerise is a must. Housed in a former mansion belonging to one of the region’s first industrial distilleries, the ecomuseum traces the development of alcohol production and daily life in days gone by. Outside, a typical chalot awaits you, these traditional granaries forming part of the Route des Chalots itinerary.

Come and discover Fougerolles-Saint-Valbert, immerse yourself in its history, savour its present and let yourself be seduced by its undeniable charm. A journey to the heart of its heritage and expertise awaits you, and it promises to be unforgettable.
