A medieval city

Chariez has retained its medieval charm, offering visitors a journey back in time. The remains of a chapel, a stone cross and numerous calvaries dot the village. A stroll through the streets will also reveal many houses typical of the old wine-growing villages, silent witnesses to a rich and prosperous past.

The fortified house, Chariez treasure

You’ll also discover the medieval house, an architectural nugget that has stood the test of time. It is not only a testimony to the past, but also a project for the future. Chosen by the Stéphane Bern Mission for a restoration project (Loto du Patrimoine 2022), the house is currently being restored to preserve its historic character while welcoming the public. A recent discovery has added a new dimension to this project: a carved stone with a human face, inserted into the oldest wall of the house.

Eventually, the house will combine the function of a home with that of a place of welcome for visitors curious to discover its history.

Chariez and its church Jewel of the 18th century

Chariez church dates back to the 18th century and is a listed building. Its Comtois bell tower, typical of the region, and its 1689 bell add a touch of authenticity and grandeur to this place of worship. Inside, you can admire a 16th-century painting of the Virgin of the Rosary, also listed as a Historic Monument.

A panorama not to be missed!

The village is dominated by a plateau known as Camp de César, which offers breathtaking views over the surrounding valley. It’s an ideal vantage point for photographers and nature lovers alike.
