Getting up high

One of Vesoul’s must-sees is undoubtedly the Colline de la Motte, crowned by the Notre-Dame chapel. The site offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding plain, the Vosges, the Jura and, on a clear day, the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. Below, you can see the Vesoul-Vaivre lake.

It’s a delight for young and old alike. As soon as the fine weather arrives, the lake becomes a paradise for families, sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing swim, a sailing session or simply a stroll along the banks, the lake has something for everyone. Nearby, the Ludolac aquatic complex promises moments of fun and laughter, with its slides and play pools.

Explore the historic centre

The historic heart of Vesoul is full of treasures to discover. A stroll through the old town of Vesoul will take you to the church of Saint Georges, an imposing monument that bears witness to the town’s history. Not far away, the former Ursuline convent houses the Georges-Garret museum, which exhibits works by Jean-Léon Gérôme, the internationally renowned painter and sculptor who was born in Vesoul.

The artist’s birthplace, on rue d’Alsace Lorraine, is a must-see for art lovers.

The legacy by Jean-Léon Gérôme

Take to the streets in search of street art frescoes inspired by the works of Jean-Léon Gérôme, creating a dialogue between past and present. The work of Italian graffiti artist Andrea Ravo Mattoni is a perfect example: head to the Passage des Annonciades to discover his tribute to Jean-Léon Gérôme: a reproduction of “La Vérité sortant du Puits” on an entire façade.

Discover Vesoul to the rhythm of events

Vesoul is also home to two major events: the Foire de la Sainte Catherine and the FICA (Festival International des Cinémas d’Asie). The Foire de la Sainte Catherine is an annual trade fair and also a tradition, where young unmarried women of 25 invoke the saint to find them a husband and, for the occasion, wear hats decorated in green and yellow. As for FICA, it’s a not-to-be-missed event for film buffs, offering a window on Asian cinema and distant cultures.
