Le Corbusier's chapel

The Notre-Dame du Haut hill, majestically overlooking Ronchamp, is the town’s most emblematic site. It is home to the famous chapel built by Le Corbusier in 1955, a work of architectural art that continues to amaze visitors from all over the world. It is also the only UNESCO site in Haute-Saône. In fact, the chapel has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2016, along with 16 other Le Corbusier sites in 7 countries, under the heading “The work of Le Corbusier, an exceptional contribution to the Modern Movement”.

La Colline Notre-Dame du Haut

But this hill is not just about the chapel. It is also home to the Pyramid of Peace, another of Le Corbusier’s masterpieces, as well as the Porterie complex and the Sainte-Claire monastery designed by Renzo Piano, and the campanile designed by Jean Prouvé. The site is a must-see for architecture and history enthusiasts, offering exceptional views of the surrounding landscape.

The hill is easily accessible on foot from the centre of Ronchamp, starting from the church of Notre-Dame du Bas. Follow the old Way of the Cross, now signposted as a hiking route.

La Filature of Ronchamp

Ronchamp is also a place of creativity and innovation. La Filature, a former textile factory transformed into a third place, is a perfect symbol of this dynamic. It is home to a fablab, a microfactory with innovative exhibitions, and hosts a variety of cultural and sporting events throughout the year. It’s a place where people can meet and exchange ideas.

Coal mines A rich heritage

Ronchamp’s mining heritage is another facet of its identity. The headframe of the Puits Sainte-Marie, a reminder of the town’s industrial past, can be seen from the road leading to the chapel. The spoil heaps, remnants of the coal mines on which specific and even rare plant species have developed, add a unique character to this landscape. The Marcel Maulini Mine Museum, although currently undergoing renovation, promises to become an essential place of learning and discovery for understanding the lives of miners and the impact of this industry on the region.
