The basilica From Luxeuil-les-Bains

The Basilique Saint-Pierre in Luxeuil-les-Bains is the former abbey church of the Benedictine monastery of Saint Columban. Saint Columban, an Irish monk in the 6th century, had a profound influence on the Haute-Saône region when he founded Luxeuil Abbey. His influence has endured down the centuries, making Luxeuil-les-Bains a place of pilgrimage and discovery for history buffs.

Exceptional architecture

Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, the basilica harmoniously combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its pink Vosges sandstone walls give it a unique beauty. The main nave, with its elegance and height, impresses visitors from the moment they enter. Don’t miss the triskel on the keystone above the stairs, a symbol rich in meaning representing the Trinity.

A wealth of treasures Find out more

The basilica is full of treasures. You’ll find medieval tombstones that bear witness to local history. The Renaissance walnut stalls come from Besançon Cathedral. The 19th-century pulpit, originally intended for Notre-Dame de Paris, is also a remarkable feature. Finally, don’t miss the statues, including a Baroque representation of Saint Nicholas and a 17th-century statue of Saint Columban.

The organ A visual and aural masterpiece

The jewel in the basilica’s crown is undoubtedly its 17th-century organ. With its 3,137 pipes, this impressive instrument is not only a musical masterpiece but also a visual work of art. Its sculpted case, evoking the prow of a royal ship, is a spectacle in itself.

To promote this exceptional heritage, the basilica organises “Organ Saturdays”. These concerts allow visitors to fully appreciate the power of this instrument. It’s a unique opportunity to combine architectural discovery and musical experience in a setting steeped in history.

Take advantage From the calm of the cloister

The cloister adjoining the basilica, dating from the end of the 15th century, offers a space for meditation and completes the visit magnificently, for a moment of calm. Also built of pink Vosges sandstone, it is the last medieval vestige of the Benedictine monastery founded by Saint Columban. As you stroll along its paths, you can admire the coats of arms of the abbots who helped build the cloister, engraved on the keystones.

Despite the loss of one of its wings and numerous colonnettes, the cloister offers a serene setting conducive to contemplation. The timeless charm of this site makes it a must-see for heritage lovers.
