Basketry

Nestling in the heart of a bountiful natural environment, Haute-Saône is home to an age-old craft that is renowned for its versatility: basketry. This craft, far from being frozen in time, is constantly reinventing itself, skilfully blending the useful with the aesthetic.

From sturdy baskets to contemporary creations, basketry is a subtle part of our everyday lives. It adorns our interiors with elegant screens, illuminates our spaces with unique light fittings, and structures our gardens with ingenious living hedges. Haute-Saône, with its forests and springs, offers an ideal setting for this art.

Wicker, from the willow tree, bends to the creative wills of craftsmen, giving rise to works that are as diverse as they are unexpected.

For those curious enough to try their hand at this craft, some craftsmen offer introductory courses. This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a world where nature and craftsmanship intertwine, just like the wickerwork shaped by expert hands.

Soapery

Haute-Saône is home to 6 artisan soap factories. These local workshops use time-honoured know-how while innovating to improve well-being and protect the environment. At the heart of their production are superfatted soaps made by cold saponification. This traditional method preserves the natural glycerine, providing optimum hydration for the skin. But the offer doesn’t stop there: solid shampoos, deodorants, balms and oils often complete a varied range of natural skincare products.

Some soap factories, like “Aux bel’fleurs”, rely on short circuits, using vegetable oils from their own organic farms. Others, such as Savonnerie des mille étangs, proudly display the Nature & Progrès label, proof of their ecological commitment.

These passionate craftsmen combine tradition and innovation, creating products that respect both the skin and the planet. Their approach is perfectly in keeping with the identity of Haute-Saône, a land of unspoilt nature and authenticity. Next time you’re in the area, don’t hesitate to push open the door to these workshops. You’ll discover a unique olfactory universe and products that tell the story of a committed region.

Pottery and ceramics

Haute-Saône is home to a dynamic community of potters and ceramists, of whom there are still around ten practising this art. In the Vallée de l’Ognon, in Boult to be precise, you’ll find a traditional pottery workshop and a ceramist.

Sophie Roca, a Catalan-born ceramist, found her inspiration in the village of Boult. Her art is characterised by the use of porcelain or stoneware, shaped into minimalist pieces. The subtlety of her creations lies in the delicate textures and discreet chromatic touches she adds. Her varied range includes everyday objects such as bowls and dishes, as well as decorative pieces such as vases and lighting.

Founded in 1872 by Gaspard Guidot, the Boult pottery perpetuates the art of glazed earthenware using traditional methods. The workshop has preserved its original layout and manufacturing process: shaping on the wheel, slip-coating, drying, decoration with a cruet and glazing, scrupulously respecting the techniques of yesteryear. The resulting creations proudly display the workshop’s traditional shapes and motifs.
