"The human beauty of Monteverdi's Vespers by Les Traversées Baroques: in Dijon, the ensemble Les Traversées Baroques founded by Étienne Meyer and Judith Pacquier joins the ranks of the great interpreters of Claudio Monteverdi's spiritual masterpiece". ResMusica, Jean-Luc Clairet, June 2024
Intimate or monumental, mystical or extrovert, Monteverdi's Vespers are not only an unparalleled, fabulously inventive work, but also a musical experience as rare as it is unforgettable.
It was in 1610 that the Vespers of the Virgin were published, a score of exuberant sound, modernity and diversity that is absolutely extraordinary. With this masterpiece, dedicated to Pope Paul V, Monteverdi demonstrated the heights of his art and inspiration, militantly and exemplarily illustrating the dogma of the cult of the Virgin reaffirmed by the recent Council of Trent. Wouldn't Rome, Caput Mundi, be the ideal setting for the greatest composer of his time? Alas, the great of this world do not always listen to the power of music. He had hoped to attract the attention of Pope Paul V in Rome, but it was in Venice, three years later, that Monteverdi found a suitable base.
Saint Mark's, with its Byzantine gold, its oriental sensuality, its domes that seem predestined for both the voluptuous colours and the spatialised polyphony of these luxuriant vespers. Venice, about to become the capital of a new genre: opera... These vespers, with their rich imagination, seem to explore all styles and all moods, from the most liturgical to the most theatrical, alternating between ecstatic prayer and the expression of an exuberant, secular passion. Complex and evolving in structure, they present a prodigious range of forms, from hymns and psalms to the concluding Magnificat, all based on the use of plainchant melodies. Religious depth and operatic grandeur thus merge in this unique work, between 'old' and 'new' style, Renaissance balance and Baroque flourish.
