Come and take part in a conference at the Musée Baron Martin.
Sylvie David will take you on a journey through the history of banquets in ancient Greece, based on literary accounts by great authors such as Aristophanes and Plato. In addition to the consumption of drinks - including the wine associated with Dionysus - and food - honey, cakes, etc. - where guests feasted in a reclining position amidst song and dance, banquets provided a form of cohesion in ancient societies. These events served a variety of purposes, from banquets of prestige and pageantry that showcased the generosity of the host to banquets intended to honour the gods and funeral feasts.
So, after looking at the material conditions of the banquet and the pleasures associated with it, the lecture will highlight the ritual dimension of the banquet and the pleasures associated with it (playful, erotic, artistic or philosophical aspects).
Sylvie David will take you on a fascinating tour of this original practice! Afterwards, take a look at the Greek and Campanian ceramics in the museum.
