The GR59 links the GR5 to the GR9, the Vosges to the Jura. It forms a link between the two massifs. It starts at the summit of the Ballon d'Alsace (1247m) and enters Haute-Saône on a rocky path that stretches between the Col du Stalon and the Col du Luthier. It is joined by the GR7 and GR533 on the eastern flank of the Ballon de Servance. It then enters the Ballons Comtois Nature Reserve. It then overlooks the Saint-Antoine forest and climbs to the top of the Ballon de Belfahy. After passing through the village of the same name, the highest village in Haute-Saône (840m), the route descends into the Fresse valley and climbs back up along the ridge of Mont de Vanne. It passes the Roc du Plainet (with views of the Belfort Gap and Switzerland), plunges down to Ronchamp and passes the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Haut, the famous work of Le Corbusier. After an arduous descent to Belverne, the route continues towards Saulnot. After climbing the Motte de Grammont, the route continues towards Baume-les-Dames. There are several refreshment and accommodation points along the route through the Haute-Saône.
