Mont Vaudois rises to a height of 525m and offers generous views of the Vosges, Jura and Bernese Alps. The site, occupied since Neolithic times, became a stronghold after the loss of Alsace and Lorraine in 1871. The aim was to control the Belfort Gap and defend the new border.
