Visite du choeur roman

rue de l'église, 70270 Mélisey
Visit of the Romanesque choir of the church of Saints Peter and Paul, on request.

The apse and the bell tower date from the 12th century. They are built on the foundations of an older parish church: archaeological excavations carried out between 1989 and 1990 led to the discovery of two monolithic sarcophagi dating from the 8th century.

The framework of the nave is dilapidated at the beginning of the 19th century, in particular because of successive wars. This part of the church was finally demolished and replaced by a new Gothic Revival style building at the end of the 19th century. The original project also included the replacement of the bell tower, which was left temporarily and then definitively due to lack of financial means. However, both parts are built with the same material, pink sandstone from the Vosges mountains.

The Romanesque parts (choir bay, bell tower, chevet) were classified as historical monuments in 1986.
