Launched in 1967, the Wetlands count is the world's oldest participatory science programme for birds. These counts mobilise a global network of nearly 150,000 volunteers who count nearly 1.5 billion birds in 50,000 wetlands in 180 countries. In France, around fifty local regional or departmental coordinators are responsible for mobilising more than 1,500 volunteer observers and organising counts in more than 500 different wetlands.
In Haute-Saône, the main wetland in the east of the department is located in the commune of Champagney. Every year, volunteers from the LPO count all the waterbirds that live there: grebes, ducks, scaups, etc. In January, but also every month from October to March, you can join them and learn how to identify the birds they count. A spyglass will be available for participants!
Outing to Champagney (70) organised by Dominique Hélin. Bring binoculars if possible. Exact time and place of meeting to be specified after registration via territoire-de-belfort@lpo.fr (places are limited). Depending on the weather, the count may take place in the afternoon or on the following day, so it's important to reserve your place so that the volunteer in charge can keep you informed if there are any adjustments.
