Lure was originally a Gallo-Roman villa, the foundations of which have been found in the Saint Quentin district and have been dated to the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. In 610, Saint Desle, an Irish monk, disciple of Saint Columban and founder of the Luxeuil abbey, arrived in Lure. Saint Desle founded an oratory around which an abbey was built, which later came under the protection of the German emperors.
